Effective learning for programmers

Quick question. Do you think about strategies for learning? Do you believe some people are just born with the ability to excel at certain things? Or do you believe in the 10,000 hour rule?

Allison Kaptur recently gave a keynote at Kiwi PyCon in New Zealand on effective styles of learning. This keynote wasn’t just geared towards programmers but anyone who has to learn anything. I guess that’s everyone, right?

She basically said there are two types of people. Those who say they can and those who say they can’t. The people that say they can are people with growth mindsets. The people that say they can’t have what’s called fixed mindsets.

I thought the keynote was quite interesting. You can read her blog post Effective learning strategies for programmers here.
